There is no download progress bar on this site, and you do not need an account here. The 64-bit installer is the 8.9.8.1 file published by Notepad++ on GitHub.
- Use a download button on this site to get the 8.9.8.1 64-bit installer. For a 32-bit, ARM64, or portable package, open the official downloads page.
- Choose the Windows installer that matches the PC. On a typical Windows 10 or 11 computer that is the 64-bit installer. The same page also lists other official packages, including 32-bit, ARM64, and portable archives.
- Run only the file you just downloaded from that page. If Windows asks for administrator permission, continue only when you recognize that file.
- The installer can include optional parts. Localization files, themes, auto-completion, the function list, the auto-updater, and Plugins Admin are the useful ones for the tutorials on this site. Plugins Admin needs the auto-updater component.
- The installer can also add an Explorer command such as Edit with Notepad++. That choice is optional.
- Finish the setup and open Notepad++ from the Start menu. The first window is an editor, not an installer for a programming language.
Systems the project supports
As reviewed on 9 October 2026, the project's supported-system document lists Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and Windows 11 as supported. It says the current build can run on Windows 7 and Windows 8, but those systems are not supported.
There is no official macOS or Linux download on the project site. This guide does not distribute a compatibility-layer build.
Older Windows releases have older last versions in that same document. Use the official page rather than a copy hosted somewhere else.
Download questions
How do I install Notepad++?
Use the download button on this site for the 8.9.8.1 64-bit installer, then run it. For a 32-bit, ARM64, or portable package, open https://notepad-plus-plus.org/downloads/ and choose the official package that matches the PC. Close Notepad++ before you install. This site does not host those files. The steps are in the install tutorial.
What is the latest version of Notepad++?
On 10 October 2026, the first section on the official downloads page was 8.9.8.1. That is not a permanent latest version. Use https://notepad-plus-plus.org/downloads/ as the current list.
Is there a 64-bit version of Notepad++?
Yes. The main download button on this site starts the 8.9.8.1 64-bit installer. The official downloads page also lists 32-bit and ARM64 packages. A standard Windows 10 or 11 PC usually wants the 64-bit installer. A plugin later has to match that same architecture.
Is there a portable version of Notepad++?
Yes. The official downloads page lists a portable package for the same version. That package does not follow the installer steps. The main download button on this site starts the 64-bit installer, not the portable package.
How do I update Notepad++?
Close Notepad++ if it is running, then run the installer from the official downloads page so it can replace the program files. The auto-updater in the installer is optional; Plugins Admin needs that component. This site does not rewrite the project's release history.
How do I fix Notepad++ installation errors?
If Windows warns that the file's source is unknown, download it again from the official downloads page. Do not switch to a third-party repack. If an older Notepad++ is still open, close it before you run the installer, and check that the package matches the PC's architecture.
How do I uninstall Notepad++?
A copy installed by the installer can be removed in Windows Settings, Apps. The portable package is a folder and does not use those installer steps. This site does not host either file.
Is Notepad++ safe to download?
The button on this site points at the 8.9.8.1 64-bit installer that Notepad++ published on GitHub. Other packages stay on the official downloads page. This site does not attach an installer, a repack, or a modified build. Do not take an installer from a software bundle or a forum attachment.
Does this website host the Notepad++ installer?
No. The main download buttons start the 8.9.8.1 64-bit installer on GitHub. This site does not attach an installer, a repack, or a modified build.
Do I need an account to download Notepad++?
Not on this site, and the official downloads page does not require an account either. You should not be asked to register before the file is offered.
